Paying passengers, or revenue passengers, even if they show up last minute, also have priority over buddy passes. This even includes standby revenue passengers. Sounding even less like a benefit? Just kidding… not really. Your place on the standby list against other passes may depend on when you were listed or checked-in on the flight.
Ultimately, your place is always subject to change. There will be times there are seats open but, even after not getting on the first leven flights, you still cannot get on. Most, if not all, airlines earn additional revenue through cargo mail, human remains, animals, kitchen sinks. Every plane, without exception, has weight limits. If the plane meets their maximum weight after all paying passengers and cargo have been calculated, some non-revs may be left behind.
You never want to be on an overweight plan. Trust me on this. If you are stuck due to weather, overbooking, or lack of availability, be prepared. The airline owes you nothing.
You are not eligible for amenities or protection, not even those free peanuts they give out because you are traveling on a buddy pass. Again, be prepared to find another way home. Are you TeamCheckedBag? If you check your bags and your bags are lost, you may be SOL.
The airline, as part of the terms and conditions for traveling on their buddy pass, may exclude you from being compensated for lost bags. Employees are given a limited number of passes. Buddy passes are not always the most economical flight option. There could be one last obstacle. Though many airlines no longer require non-revs to dress casket-fresh, please refrain from looking as if you are a street walker, homeless, or wearing anything that has writing that might even be slightly offensive.
Choosing the best flight option depends on many factors. Getting to New York on a Monday morning may have you getting to know random airport employees instead. These peak travel time are packed like biscuits in a can with for business travelers. It also depends on the carrier and the market. You may have an easier time getting a cat to care about anything than trying to get on the one flight a carrier offers per day to your destination.

Disregarding airline policies may result in the revocation of Buddy Pass eligibility and serious consequences for the Delta employee who gave away the pass.
Active Delta employees have priority over retired employees and dependents of an employee. A Delta employee traveling on a pass dressed in his work uniform may not drink alcohol on board a flight. Delta gate agents may refuse to board pass holders whose behavior they deem inappropriate. In case of delayed or lost luggage, the airline does not provide complimentary delivery, but will hold it at the destination airport or forward it to the nearest airport for pickup.
If a flight is overbooked, it is unlikely that you'll make it aboard the plane as Buddy passes are booked with standby status. Look for flights that aren't fully booked. Give your information to the Delta employee. The employee will need general information from you such as your name and address to put you in the Delta travel system as a standby flyer.
Pay for your flight. Give your credit or debit card information to the employee to secure your flight. Depending on the destination, you may only have to pay half or a quarter of what the flight actually costs. Check-in early. On the day of the flight, check-in one to two hours early.
