All of this was happening in , way before Arpanet existed or anyone else claims to have sent the first email. This cloud may include a multitude of email servers like DNS servers. Email service providers that process a big volume of emails often have their own private network clouds.
These providers have many mail servers and send all mails through a central gateway server. Email messages are just like a letter enclosed in an envelope, sent via a messenger.
It is up to you to choose a secure envelope and a trustworthy messenger. When an email is transferred across the internet, a mail server and two computers are part of the equation. The mail server stores the emails and lets the computers download the message.
That is why, certain protocols are required to guard this exchange. Just like Microsoft Outlook, various email applications exist that support email protocols. For people using multiple computers and devices, such as mobile phones and tablets, the ability to synchronize email actions among devices is essential. When a person uses IMAP, and he or she reads, deletes or moves email into folders, the action occurs across all devices simultaneously.
Since it is possible to download only the email headers with IMAP, it's much quicker. Additionally, any offline changes that are made to email are transmitted to the remote server once an Internet connection is re-established. Essentially, IMAP allows the user to archive their email on their computer or device while having a backup stored on the remote server.
Additionally, business users, especially those in professions that demand confidentiality, prefer to use IMAP since it allows for the added security email encryption affords. POP should have been dead a long time ago, but a lot of people still use it because they don't know how to switch to IMAP. It's actually quite easy and usually takes less than 10 minutes, but you have to know how.
We made this site just for you. On the next page, you'll see a table showing instructions specific to A the email service and B the client you use. Follow these steps and you'll be all set in a few minutes!
Make sure to back up your hard drive before switching to IMAP, in case something goes wrong. RFC was published in and POP3 has not been revised since that time, though a few subsequent RFCs define optional extensions and additions to the basic protocol, such as alternative authentication mechanisms.
While POP3 has been enhanced and refined, its developers have remained true to the basic idea of a very simple protocol for quick and efficient e-mail transfer.
POP3 is a straight-forward state-based protocol, with a client and server proceeding through three stages during a session. This is true despite most people not using version numbers with many other protocols, and almost nobody using any other version of POP anyway. But it is the convention, and I will follow it in the rest of this section. It implements the offline access model, allowing users to retrieve mail from their SMTP server and use it on their local client computers.
It is specifically designed to be a very simple protocol and has only small number of commands. Note: There are some implementations of POP that attempt to implement the disconnected access model, with limited success.
More often, however, IMAP is used for this purpose, since it is better suited to that access model. See the overview of IMAP for more details. Please Whitelist This Site? Thanks for your understanding!
